Voting

Less than 100 years ago, women weren't allow to vote. At that time we were working our way to citizenship from chattel. The long road hasn't been easy and we're still plugging away. Not helped by those who think that discrimination is (choose one of the following): Non-existent, our fault (be it that we are actually inferior or our actions simply lead to so be paid less), justified.

Today we get to vote. I encourage everyone to go out and vote. In California we have two very important measures to defeat: Prop 8 & Prop 4. They strip away rights of our citizens. The conservative minority keeps trying to make our society more hateful and restrictive. We must go out and vote against these two measures. Prop 8 removes the right of gay people to marry. Prop 4 requires that minors get signed permission from their parents to have an abortion - leaving our most vulnerable population stuck with back alley abortions or unwanted pregnancies.

Also, we have the chance to vote for president. We can take steps to move our country to a more positive vision - one where we care for the environment; where we provide for those with less; where we might give people a shot at health insurance; where we education our children instead of leading them into useless wars; where we join the global community instead of trying to dominate it.

We can get on a better path. Please go out and vote.

A progressive, well ordered society does not happen by accident. It also does not remain strong when neglected. The American society has been neglected by what my friends aptly dubbed the "White Taliban" for the last 8 years - hopefully the American public will realize the folly of the last election and make the right choices for the country, and the world this November 4th - not just their for their own personal agendas.

We have to right to vote for who ever we choose, it's important to also remember that we vote for our place and standing in the worlds policital arena, not just our local community and immediate leaders.

I have my fingers crossed we will no longer have a Republican government in the USA, although the mess the Democrats are inheriting will certinaly leave them with an up hill struggle for success...

It will be an uphill battle for the Democrats. Bush and his cronies have pillaged and ravaged our once great nation.

What also amazed me was dinner the other night with the man from Houston. He truly believes that if/when Obama becomes president, that we will become a socialist nation.

The two components that fascinate me about his views is the clear impact of the Republican propaganda efforts - how is it that Bush is the great capitalist, was the one to nationalize our banks? And second, that there is still fear regarding socialism. This isn't a totalitarian state, just the allowance of our government to provide additional services to the our less fortunate citizens. Almost all other civilized nations have moved in that direction, to the point that we look like backwater bumpkins.
